Join us for the next session in our Mudd Talks series, "Consumer Electronics and the Circular Economy," with Julia L. F. Goldstein '88 P18 on Wednesday, April 21, at 5 p.m. PDT. People are familiar with the phrase, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” but to truly address the problems of climate change and industrial pollution, we need to go further. People and the planet will benefit if industries of all sorts strive toward a circular economy, where nothing becomes waste, and all materials are part of a continuous cycle.

Goldstein will discuss the potential for a circular economy with a focus on the electronics industry. What materials go into the electronic devices we use every day, where do they come from, and how are they processed? What are companies doing to reduce the environmental impact of electronics manufacturing, and what more can, and should they do? She will answer these questions and share her perspective on an industry she’s been writing about for 20 years.

Open to all HMC constituents.

Julia L.F. Goldstein ’88 P18 (engineering) has been fascinated with engineered materials since she took Intro to Materials Science from Professor Joe King her junior year at Mudd. After graduating from Mudd with an engineering degree, she earned an MS from Stanford and a PhD from UC Berkeley, both in materials science. Goldstein started her career as a process development engineer in semiconductor packaging before migrating to journalism in 2001. As the owner of JLFG Communications, she writes white papers, articles and other technical marketing content for manufacturing companies, including many in the electronics industry. She is the award-winner author of two books:  Material Value: More Sustainable, Less Wasteful Manufacturing of Everything from Cell Phones to Cleaning Products and Rethink the Bins: Your Guide to Smart Recycling and Less Household Waste.

Read Goldstein's recent interview in Mudd Magazine on how she bridges the gap between engineering and marketing.
